Since when does a kid who is just making a joke deserve to expelled from high school? As I'm sure most of you know at Alta High School a kid was at a Spirit Assembly was dressed fully in white with a pointed hood on his head with holes cut out for eyes.
Larz Cosby of larzcosby.wordpress.com decided that this was offensive and went and ripped the hood off of the other kid's head, and now the kid is being threatened with expulsion from his school. Okay, that makes sense. In an assembly where the Juniors are all dressed in white and the Seniors are all clothed in black how could you not see that it is simply a joke? The kid wasn't targeting any specific person of any ethnicity, he was just pointing out the funny side of this kind of an assembly.
Now what really pisses me off is that a student who was just merely playing a joke and not harming anybody nor threatening them in any way is being kicked out of his school while other offenses are being looked over like nothing.
For example, this one guy who I work with who goes to a neighboring high school in the area, was just being is own eccentric self. One day at school this football player from that school couldn't tolerate my friend's personality. I'll admit my friend does have a mental disability and can't always control they way he acts, so the football player, being ticked off at my friend, went and repeatedly punched him in the face until my friend was unrecognizable. My friend's face was so misshapen, that he had to undergo several surgeries to reconstruct it.
The football player that did this was only suspended for three days for "aggressive behavior". Okay, cool. He renders a kid with a mental disability unrecognizable and is only suspended? That makes sense. Its cool that he can do this, but a teenager being "racist" deserves expulsion? I don't think so.
Another incident that happened at Alta that was also mistreated was another similar scenario. A bigger kid couldn't handle the way that a smaller kid was acting toward his and pulled out a knife and threatened the smaller kid's life. You know what happened then? The kid with the knife was suspended for one day and got his knife back afterward. Seriously? How can physical harm be less dangerous and deserving of less punishment than that of jest and "racism"?
Our society is way out of whack if this is what we deem important and wrong. I guarantee you that there are and will continue to be situations that cause people harm and physical injury that will go unnoticed, but they're okay, because its not racist.
Come on guys, let's stop worrying about things like the event at Alta and seriously reconsider our values. I'm way more troubled about people getting hurt and threatened than I am about an act meant to be received comically, and you should to.
